Treasure stumble…a post by Tom

“Where you stumble, there your treasure lies.”- Joseph Campbell "...but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles" -1 Cor 1:23 It seems like much of life is endless energy spend avoiding the failures. Avoiding the stumbling. Avoiding the humiliations. Yet the gospel reveals to us that it is in the very place of our stumbling that we encounter God! The enneagram is a great tool to reveal to us where we stumble…and where our treasure is! Consider the following a treasure hunt. For the reformer types (ONES) our stumbling block is the anger

Perfectly imperfekt…a post by Tom

Why can’t anything or anyone be perfect? Why can’t this thing go the way it is supposed to? The long answer involves all the flaws, shortcomings, mistakes, sins, errors, and imperfections in every given person and situation. The short answer is because that every person or thing is not God. Seems like God put Himself in a bind by creating anything because anything created would always fall short of the Creator. After all only God is good. Even without sin entering the picture everything still falls short of the full glory of God! It is refreshing to know that

Escaping the Matrix…a post by Jim

God created us to be a complex mix of biology and experience. We are embodied souls who have minds that inevitably draw us into relationships. Gregory Boyd calls this complex interface a matrix (Escaping the Matrix). He explains what he means by saying, biologically, we are given billions of neurons that connect via trillions of neuro synapsis. We are also given the manner by which the brain is constructed to function (e.g. neurons firing together wire together). God created us this way and it is “very good” (and incredibly complex!). Now what gets registered in our God-given neuro

Let’s Get Physical…a post by Jim

A couple months ago I wrote a post about the importance our bodies in spiritual formation. I’m coming back to the same topic because I just can’t get it out of my mind (and my body!). What Your Body Knows about God (Rob Moll ...If you are interested in more on the body and its impact on formation I strongly encourage you to read it) is also at work in my reflections on the body. As I have read it (and pay attention to my own experience) I am more and more convinced that our bodies REALLY influence the

Seasons of Life…a post by Joy

Seasons of life come to us whether we want them to or not. It’s interesting that this is the way God organized and planned the rhythm of life from the beginning. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8;11 states: There is a time for everything, a season for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal A time to tear down and a time to rebuild. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a

Walking In Step…a post by Joy

Many years ago, I memorized Psalm 37: 23 as a song. The verse reads :  “The steps of the godly are directed by the Lord. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will not fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. “ This song has played over and over in my heart and mind the last couple of weeks. I began to think about the different kinds of steps that Christ guides us to take in our journeys of spiritual formation. Some steps moving forward are small and some are moving by

Invitation #3 – Less Presumption/More Humility

By |2014-11-17T19:32:31-05:00May 27th, 2014|Humility, Presumption|0 Comments

Presumption is a slippery thing. We have a legal system built on presumed innocence until proven guilty. I’m glad to live in a country that has that presumption. But when it comes to relational situations presumption is generally considered a negative thing. We can easily feel disrespected and diminished if another presumes to know us and what we are living. Relational presumption gives the vibe of superiority and superficiality. And as Doctor Phil asks, “How is that working for you?”
