Clifton W. J. Roth, MA, PSAP – I was born and raised in beautiful Chattanooga, Tennessee!  I literally “cut my teeth on the back of a church pew” and my parents intilled a deep and rich faith tradition in my 5 siblings and me.  After 3 years of Bible College I was challenged to broaden my horizon and pursue a degree in Organizational Management from Bryan College.  In 2004 I married my high school sweetheart, Sally Jane and we set off on what has been an incredible adventure together!  After two years in the D.C. area we moved to Louisville, KY so I could work on my Master’s degree at Southern Seminary.  Louisville quickly felt like home!  We planted roots.  We bought a house, received the blessing of 3 daughters and took a job with CarMax that turned into an amazing 8-year career in sales.  Since 2014 I have had the joy and privilege of serving as a staff pastor at Sojourn Church Midtown.

Over the last 5 years, I have had an increasing passion for joining individuals and couples that are searching for hope, freedom, and healing from the pain of sexual sin, addiction, intimacy disorders, betrayal, and shame. The shame and guilt around sexual brokenness, especially in the church and for church leaders, seems suffocating at times. But I am here to say there is hope, because I have experienced it!   One of the most valuable gifts I have recieved in my recovery is the gift of guidance in trusted relationship.  I am grateful for the opportunity to get to serve others in the same way.

Along with my MA from SBTS, I have also completed CrossPoint Ministry’s two year Soul Care Institute training and am certified as a Pastoral Sex Addiction Professional (PSAP) from the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals.

Clif has been a participant with Crosspoint Ministry since 2010.  He  currently leads a small group at our Deeper Journey Retreats and teaches on sexuality at the Soul Care Institute.

You can contact Clif directly at ( for guidance and help with sex/porn addiction and betrayal recovery as well as spiritual life coaching.  October 14-15, 2019 Clif will be leading a training intensive focused on equipping church leaders to better understand and help those under their care regarding sexual sin, sex addiction, infidelity, betrayal trauma.

Thomas Pussel, Th.M., MBA, MHSA – I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio behind three city baseball diamonds that were also home. After college at Wittenberg I continued my business education at Xavier in healthcare. A move to Texas introduced a new career, an awakened faith, my bride to be, and a cancer diagnosis that changed everything.

Once the chemo was completed we got married and moved to Dallas for a new found calling and seminary education at Dallas Theological Seminary. While in Dallas I had the privilege of working in Spiritual Formation at the Howard Hendricks Center for Christian Leadership.

Following seminary I co-planted Fellowship Church of Louisville and served as Teaching Pastor for five years. During that time I became involved with CrossPoint. In 2011 we moved to Cleveland to plant Prodigal Church and to extend the ministry of CrossPoint in this region. Ross and I have two children and whenever I can sneak away I drink coffee and read my way through the Modern Library 100 Best Novels.

In 2011 Tom became a partner with CrossPoint.  Tom lives in Cleveland, OH where he is the pastor of Prodigal Church. Tom also serves as an assistant hospital chaplain, is currently a CPE student at the Cleveland Clinic, and is a certified Grief Recovery Specialist.

You are welcome to contact Tom directly ( for Grief Recovery and Spiritual Life Coaching. He also leads Deeper Journey – Cleveland.

Sue - 2Susan Payne, MS, MSCC – I have enjoyed the people, culture and food of DC, Boston, California, Kentucky, Philly, England and Japan… even though I am a mid-western, Michigan girl at heart. Being moved by the deep relational and spiritual needs seen through women’s and small group ministry and my twenty years working as a speech therapist (Gallaudet University), I later returned to school for a master’s degree in Christian counseling (Cairn University).

My participation in Deeper Journey gave me the clarity and courage to pursue my calling. I now specialize in grief recovery, coming alongside people as they adjust to life’s twists and turns. I am passionate about the importance of living in community and have enjoyed leading small groups and training leaders. Co-leading the Deeper Journey Phillyretreats with my husband is a privilege and a gift. I also serve as a Christian counselor with Serving Leaders Ministry.

Brett - 1Brett Payne, MA, M.Div. – I grew up a professor’s kid in Oxford, Ohio. After finishing a degree in history at Miami University I married Susan and went to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary where I studied Church History. In later years I also finished an M.Div. Church Music at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. I have had a consistent and passionate interest in Christian spirituality and spiritual formation and have served in a variety of ways as a pastor and worship leader in churches for much of the past twenty-four years. I have been in Pennsylvania for almost ten years. I am now a full-time partner with CrossPoint ministry.

My passion for God and deep desire for healing and unity in the church has driven my calling. I believe God can bring substantive change to our souls through his ministering presence and have come to realize that my greatest passion is in bringing this hope to others. My coaching with Rich Plass and my experiences in retreat series, such as  Deeper Journey, have been more important than any of my schooling in nurturing spiritual practices that have strengthened and sustained me in life and ministry. I am extremely thankful to be part of the CrossPoint team. You can find out more about my CrossPoint ministry on the east coast at
