My experience of Deeper Journey has been crucial to my understanding of what it means to live life with God and others. Both the teaching and the time spent in my small group led me to a deeper level of self-awareness that has not only impacted my communion with God but also my community in my home and my church.
Deeper Journey is a powerful spiritual retreat series experience with a well-considered balance of teaching, community, and opportunities for personal practice of the spiritual disciplines being presented. I especially appreciated learning more about myself through the Enneagram personality assessment and how this tool identified areas of personal growth and strength to consider with God in my spiritual journey.
My time in Deeper Journey has been amazing! Rich and Jim painted a picture for me of what true union with Christ could be. That has significantly increased my longing for God.
My time in Deeper Journey has been amazing! Rich and Jim painted a picture for me of what true union with Christ could be, significantly increased my longing for God. I now understand what a vital role my internal world plays in the health of my relationships and my spiritual journey. Deeper Journey equipped me with the tools I need to access that internal world and to nurture my relationship with Christ. Spending two years on the same journey with others at these retreats created a loving, supportive community that has been a key to my growth. My small group encouraged, prayed for and listened to me as I wrestled through the most difficult spots in my journey. Yes, it is a big investment of time and money, but it is so worth it that I am back for a second round to catch all I couldn’t absorb the first time!
Deeper Journey has opened up new vistas in my soul that I knew were there but things I could not clearly articulate to myself and others. I see afresh that all of life is relational to a loving Trinitarian God. There is a deep soberness in my soul as I engage my marriage, parenting, relationships, and vocation. I am more eager each day to live in my God-given, authentic self!
I came to my first Deeper Journey during a very dark and desperate time in my life. My daughter, who already was known to have Down Syndrome, had just been diagnosed with autism as well. It was a time of questioning and loneliness, even despair. The comfort and tenderness I received through the Deeper Journey community helped strengthen me for the tasks at hand in my life. The Lord worked in a steady, slow way in my life, and I began to see real change in my perspective on life and relationship with him. Today, I am a different person. I no longer view my daughter’s disabilities as a burden from God but a blessing. God showed his power for changing my mind and heart in ways I believed were impossible. I am currently a member of the fourth Deeper Journey community and haven’t missed any opportunity to be a part of this very special community of believers! If you have ever wondered, “Where is this power so often spoken of in scripture to change my life?” the Deeper Journey community is a place to begin your search.
If you have ever wondered, “Where is this power so often spoken of in scripture to change my life?” the Deeper Journey community is a place to begin your search.
I first met Rich and Jim when I attended the first Deeper Journey experience. It was the lowest time of my life. My husband of 30 years had just asked for a divorce. The breakup involved a family business. The split hurt my career, my marriage, and my family all at once. I had spent 30 years working at running the business, raising a family, going to church and exercising. However, I had neglected building relationships. I had no support and was an emotional train wreck. Rich and Jim have taught me how to value my relationship with God, my family, and my friends. They have taught me self-awareness and how to be present with God and people. I am a changed person. I’m so grateful for the mentoring and knowledge that I have received at Deeper Journey.
The leadership of CrossPoint understands the demands of ministry. We have been pastors for a combined total of almost 50 years. We know the pressure leaders face and feel. We know a healthy pastorate requires the successful integration of the ‘functional’ and ‘spiritual’ leadership. The functional aspects of a church are vital in meeting the many needs of those being served. However, the most significant reality you bring to others is your transformed and transforming presence. It is ‘spiritual’ leadership, the quality of one’s character, which ultimately draws people to Christ.
Unfortunately, over time the functional pressures of ministry can overwhelm the leader’s soul to the point that one becomes bored or angry or vulnerable. The Leader’s Journey helps leaders live in a way which sustains their souls. It offers an intentional ‘way of being’ which fosters the ‘spiritual’ side of leadership while facing the demands of their ‘functional’ leadership.
The Leader’s Journey is a three year, twelve retreat experience held on-site at a church (we have led or currently lead LJ for churches in St. Louis, Indianapolis, Savannah, Boulder, San Diego, Louisville, Reno, Paducah and Owensboro, KY .) Once a quarter the staff takes a day to strengthen their souls in order to meet the demands of ministry and to enjoy communion with God.

Making time to embark on the Leader’s Journey under the direction of CrossPoint was one of the best decisions we have ever made. In terms of staff development, this immersive experience helped us notice and come to terms with some of the main stressors that tend to alienate leaders – from ourselves, from one another and ultimately from GOD. Under the skillful direction of Rich and Jim, the staff of Savannah Christian Church grew closer in community, developed an understanding of the dynamics of the human person and crafted a language that fosters communication within our staff culture. The approach is practical, something you can get your arms around. The focus is transformational with plenty of “whys and how-tos”. The tools are helpful and accessible. But mostly, it is the presence of these two seasoned soul-formers that make this a powerful and transforming experience. Simply put, I would do whatever it takes to facilitate Leaders Journey for the staff and leadership team of any church, no matter the size or denomination. For the team here in Savannah, it has proven to be well worth the resource investment – time, money and energy!!!
We cannot take people to a place in Jesus where we have not gone. So, we gave the staff a gift called Leader’s Journey.
Rich and Jim are a gift to the Church. These men and the content that they deliver were God’s means to save my life and ministry after severe burnout. Drawing upon the riches of God’s common grace and special grace, Leader’s Journey provides what is lacking in much of modern spiritual formation. We are currently taking our entire elder board and staff through the three-year experience. Everyone agrees that we are seeing a positive impact on our souls. Rich and Jim are more than worth the space you need to carve out of your church’s schedule and the money you need to carve out of your church’s budget. The relational return on investment has been priceless for our church. Your soul will be better off if you take seriously this content.
When I made the transition to become the lead pastor of Harvester Christian Church, I knew that the spiritual health of my new staff would be super important! If the most important thing we bring to the table in ministry is our “transformed and transforming presence,” then we must be diligent and intentional about spiritual growth and development! We cannot take people to a place in Jesus where we have not gone. So, we gave the staff a gift called Leader’s Journey. We regularly and intentionally invested in the lives of the leaders of our church. And it has made a huge difference! I can truly say with confidence that we are a spiritually healthy staff, growing in our love for Jesus, each other and the church. Jim and Rich have been a true blessing from God … in our lives personally and for the ministry! I would recommend Leader’s Journey to anyone who is privileged to lead a ministry for Jesus!
Rich and Jim are more than worth the space you need to carve out of your church’s schedule and the money you need to carve out of your church’s budget. The relational return on investment has been priceless for our church.
After nearly 20 years of ministry, while pastoring a large thriving church, I found myself depleted. Some might call it “burn-out.” All I knew was that my creativity was waning, that ministry seemed more like an obligation than opportunity and I was physically spent. I knew something had to change or I would not be in ministry mush longer. I thank God that I was able to get in contact with Rich and Jim. Through their assistance, I was able to see that my soul was empty and that no amount of ministry success could fill it. As I got back on my feet spiritually, emotionally and physically it was clear to me that nourishing the soul was something in which I and our entire staff needed guidance. We began Leader’s Journey with Rich and Jim. The retreat itself is an opportunity for Sabbath – to breathe! Jim and Rich not only instruct well with high competency but they embody a spirit of communion with God and self- awareness. Their pastoral sensitivity to the invitations of God and the needs of the soul has been refreshing to our team. We are learning the grace of living with God and not only doing for God. We are entering waters that exist in the depths of our souls rather than the shallow places. We are being equipped to thrive in ministry for years to come in hopes of not becoming another pastoral casualty. For me, I can truly say that for the first time in my ministry, I have a vision that the best years of ministry will be those in my 50’s and 60’s. Previously I thought I would peak much earlier and then hold on for dear life. If you are looking for spiritual guidance that will lead you into communion with God so that your soul can thrive through the years then I would recommend Leader’s Journey.
The Mother Wound
Why We Need the Nurturing Presence of Christ
A Retreat for Women
What was your relationship like with your mother as you were growing up?
Was she emotionally present to you or did she feel mostly distant? Was life typically all about her? Were you neglected or abandoned? Did she pass away during your childhood or young adulthood? These are only some of the mother wounds that women have suffered all through history.
Wounds from our mothers can come to us as children, as teenagers, and as adults. Many times, the wounds that our mothers pass on to us are what they experienced themselves. Wounds of abandonment, emotional distance, neglect, perfectionism, for example. In fact, these kinds of wounds can also come from other matriarchal figures such as grandmothers, aunts, teachers, and mothers-in-law.
If any of this resonates with what you have experienced or are experiencing now in your adult life, you are invited to come to this Women’s Retreat.
The Mother Wound: Why We Need the Nurturing Presence of Christ. It is an experience of being mindful of your wound in a safe place in the company of other women who have their own stories of mother wounds. If you have attended before and would like to attend again, I encourage you to do so. We all pray for the continued healing of our individual mother wounds as Christ continues His work in us to be more like Him.
No matter your age, life circumstance or role you are invited to attend the next Mother Wound Retreat at Country Lake Retreat Center. The price is $225 (there is scholarship help available if needed). You will experience the healing and hope that the nurture of Christ brings to our souls.
Like it or not wounds are a part of life and often the people that we are closest to wound us the deepest. This was definitely true for me and my relationship with my mother. I appreciated the tenderness and care that Joy demonstrated throughout the Mother Wound Retreat in addressing hard areas, asking thought-provoking and helpful questions and providing the space to address our hurts. I highly recommend the Mother Wound Retreat whether you have a lot of hurts or not, whether this is your first step in addressing your hurts in this area or not. With Joy’s tenderness, openness and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, I am confident that God will meet you and bring you further along on this healing journey as a result of this experience.
The 2014 Mother Wound Retreat was a great experience for me. It was good to make space to attend to my heart in this specific way. It was very moving to be with other women who were grieving and pained and bringing their wounds to a Savior to understand, forgive and continue to be made new. I am planning on attending the retreat again in 2015 and excited to see what new invitations the Lord has for me as I continue to learn more and more about mothering myself, mothering my children and the deep impact my mother has had on me.
